One reason that exercise gets left undone is that it is viewed as boring or too painful when first starting out. It’s easy to scrounge up an excuse like "I know exercise is good for me but I just don’t have the time for it."

What I figured out for myself and for hundreds of my clients is that the exercise program you choose must be something you enjoy doing. Especially when it comes to the setting and location.

The Gym Scene

I’ve joined many expensive gyms over the years with mixed results. For each new gym I joined I promised myself that THIS time was going to be different, THIS time I was actually going to go and get my money’s worth. Yeah right! I ended up like most gym members, going less and less frequently, and then not going at all. Sound familiar?

What’s interesting about me is that I enjoy exercising. So what happened? Why didn’t I use my gym membership like I promised I would?

Simple answer. I didn’t like gyms or their environments.

I asked myself if this could possibly be what was stopping most people from exercising. Maybe they didn’t like where they were working out so they just stop going. It made sense to me. It wasn’t the actual workout that they disliked but the environment that they were working out in.

Home gym doesn’t mean you have to buy expensive, high tech equipment for it. To be honest, the only items that make up my home gym are: an exercise ball, two adjustable dumbbells, an exercise mat, and an old stationary bike that I bought used from a local YMCA. That’s it! Nothing expensive. Nothing high tech. Simple.

I actually love my private exercise room. I enjoy the early morning private time with myself where I don’t have to worry about what I look like, or who needs the equipment I’m working out on at the moment, or who’s staring at me in the gym. I get an hour to myself and it’s a great way to start my day.

Here are a few more advantages to creating a home gym.

  • No monthly or yearly dues.
  • No packing up gym bags.
  • No commuting through rush hour traffic to get there.
  • No waiting for exercise equipment.
  • No inferiority complex because you’re working out next to Miss Fitness Model.

I realize the situation could be the opposite for you. You don’t like working out in your home and you would much rather get out and be motivated by other healthy people. Whatever the case may be, choose something you enjoy! You will never make a lifestyle change to include exercise on a consistent basis if you don’t enjoy it. Who wants to do something that feels like torture? Not me. I love my morning exercise time and if it felt like torture, I just wouldn’t do it.

Here are a few exercise and weight loss motivation tips you can try out.

  • Join an adult sports league. (Good exercise and fun too.)
  • Start your own exercise group. (Get together with like-minded people and walk or bicycle together.)
  • Join a new gym.
  • Set up a home gym.
  • Find a workout partner.

Experiment with different options until you find out what works best for you and what you enjoy doing and I assure you exercise will not be left undone again.
