Does Butter Cause Heart Disease?
Podcast: Play in new window | Download (3.2MB)

People are often shocked when they see how much butter I use and eat in one day. But I know the real truth; butter is a good fat and can actually help you lose weight.
Unfortunately, people who think butter is unhealthy is a common misconception. People lump butter with saturated fats as the cause of heart disease. Does butter cause heart disease? Is butter bad for you? What’s the truth?
Since heart disease is deadly and one of this country’s top killers knowing the truth about what actually causes it is of vital importance.
The Truth About Butter…
The simple truth is that it’s not natural fats that are causing the heart disease epidemic, its the refined sugars, it’s the processed foods, it’s the overconsumption of refined oils. You might as well add diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure to this list of killers as well. Again, don’t blame butter!
I go into much greater detail on this topic in the "Fats" Chapter of The Diet Solutions Program but here are a few nuggets of information for you to ponder:
- Did you know that during the 60 year period from 1910-1970, the proportion of traditional animal fat in the American diet declined from 83% to 62%?
- During this same time butter consumption plummeted from 18 pounds per person each year to 4 pounds per person each year.
So where’s the problem? If Americans are eating less butter now than they were before why blame butter for the increase in heart disease? It makes NO sense.
Here are two more dietary statistics to consider.
- Over the past 70 years, the average intake of dietary vegetable oils like margarine, shortening, and refined oils increased by 400%.
- During the same period, the consumption of refined sugars and processed foods increased by about 60%
If you want to blame food products for our deteriorating health problems then blame the "New-and-Improved-Tastes-Like-Butter-But-Isn’t" refined one’s that have been infiltrating our diets for the past 70 years!
Those are the historical facts, but I have better proof, it’s the results I see with my clients and my readers. When my clients stop eating the fake butters, the refined oils, the refined sugars, and the processed foods, their health sky rockets! And by sky rockets I mean, great improvement, health elevated to new and surprising levels. Not to mention the fact that they lose lots of body fat.
Remember, my clients didn’t eliminate butter from their diets, in some cases their butter intake increased. What they elimited was fake butter along with highly processed garbage foods.
What Type of Butter Do I Recommend?
It’s important to mention that the butter I use is organic and the cows that produce it are grass fed. It has this beautiful deep yellow color and is not white like most conventional butters. It has gone through minimal processing and has no added growth hormones or antibiotics.
Now that I told you butter is ok to eat, here is a delicious chicken recipe you can enjoy:
Note: the mad scientist in me sometimes forgets to document the exact recipe amounts so you may need to play around with this a bit.
Chicken with “I’m not afraid of butter” dressing
Ingredients:
2 large chicken breasts (approximately 1 lb of chicken)
6 Tbsp of melted butter
lemon juice from 1/2 large lemon
1/4 cup olive oil
salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste
Directions:
Melt 1 tbsp of butter in a large pan. Season chicken breasts with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Cook chicken breasts in butter covered on very low heat. Do not let the butter get brown. Pour lemon juice in a separate bowl. Slowly stir in the remaining melted butter as you stir mixture. Then slowly add the olive oil as you stir mixture. Season with salt, pepper and garlic powder.
Once the chicken is cooked through, serve on a plate and pour the “dressing mixture” over your cooked chicken breasts. Don’t be surprised if you are tempted to pour this dressing on your veggies and just about every other food item you can think of. It’s delicious!
Conclusion…
Don’t allow the anti-butter crowd to prevent you from enjoying butter. It tastes better and is better for you than margarine. Just don’t overindulge in it. In all things use moderation and you will start seeing improvements in your health and some weight loss benefits to boot.
